TV Characters Sing Just For You, Vol. 3

Another long-awaited volume in the series. No, wait. I forgot.....no one was waiting for this. Boy, this one has been sitting on my hard drive forever. It's been finished for a long time, but it's another one of those compilations that I hate to do all that clean-up work on. Actually, now that I think about it, this one was finished even before Volume 1 was!

And no, you're not imagining it. I skipped over Volume 2. That one's finished also, but I'm not all that thrilled with it. I guess I kept it around thinking I would change it for the better, but it seems unlikely that I'll change any of the tracks on that one, so it'll probably make it's way onto the blog eventually (aren't you lucky?).

Well, in any case, you've got Volume 3 now and it's one of my favorite comps, so I hope you get some enjoyment out of it too!

Notes on the compilation:

This one probably has more variations in sound quality than most of my comps, but considering the number of different sources this one comes from, I hope you feel more charitable towards it!

#3-#5: Vampire Slayers, Warrior Princesses, and Teenage Witches - You're nowhere in this business without good subtitling!

#10: - Thanks to Skinny Robbie for this track!

#11: - This comes from the 1977 TV show starring Greg Evigan (later on B.J. & The Bear), Paul Shaffer (later on the David Letterman show), and Gabe Dell (previously in The Bowery Boys) as the Devil who offers the boys a 'year at the top' of the recording business if they sell him their souls. I don't think the show lasted a whole year, so I guess they suffered eternal damnation for nothing.

#12 & #13: - These are a bit of cheat (as is the Ricky Nelson track) in that these are the pop versions, but they were used on the shows, and they were sung by the characters, so it still fits the criteria. In the Bewitched episode, Boyce & Hart played themselves and in the I Dream of Jeannie episode they played characters Jeannie recruited to form a band. Actually, in the Bewitched episode, Samantha's cousin, Serena 'writes' 'I'll Blow You A Kiss' and wants Boyce & Hart to sing it. I considered using that version instead, but as much as I like Elizabeth Montgomery, I like the Boyce & Hart version better.

#14: - Thanks to the old Mondo Daddykin site for this track!

#17-#19: Three songs about transition and independence.

#17: I keep expecting Christopher Knight's voice to crack on this song!

#19: It may take several hearings to get used to the singing on this track. I know I still haven't gotten used to it. If the song weren't so good and she wasn't so earnest, it might be totally unlistenable, but it's hard to resist putting Katie Holmes on this comp. And we'll all feel more sympathetic towards her if it turns out that she's been Tom Cruise's hostage all this time.

#24: I'm having a little trouble remembering for sure whether this was from the reunion TV-Movie or from the original show, but I'm pretty sure it was from the movie.

#25: She actually sang this on the show! One of the few of those kind of musical numbers that weren't set pieces (like those by people like Flatt & Scruggs, Roy Clark, or Pat Boone, for instance).

#26 & #27: Two songs about violinists.

#31: A great off-the-cuff improvised jam session by the cast.

By Request - Fitzwilly (1967 Soundtrack) (John Williams)

Another great request by 'Isbum' and another one that I was always thinking of putting up eventually. I think this may be my favorite pre-1970's John Williams score. Either this or 'How To Steal a Million'. It's a great comedy score with faux classical touches (and I'm not sure, but I think touching someone in a faux classical way is illegal in most states).

Maybe I like the score because I enjoyed the movie so much (though again I wouldn't say it was a perfect movie). It's one of those scores, like the Jerry Goldsmith Flint scores, where virtually every track automatically reminds me of a scene from the film. Hearing a track immediately triggers some kind of brain response that makes me instinctively like the score. Hmmm......makes me want to listen to the Flint scores again. "Get me Flint!!!!!!"

Enjoy!

By Request - The Honey Pot (1967 Soundtrack) (John Addison)

Another one that 'Isbum' requested and anytime I can put up something from John Addison, I'm always happy to do it. I love his work. I always wanted to put up his soundtrack to 'The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders' which might be my favorite of his scores, but a couple of the tracks are bad on my copy, so I wasn't able to. Which reminds me, if anyone else has a good copy of it, please let me know. I'd love to have it. Thanks!

I always enjoyed this movie, although it might be accused of being slightly stagey, but if I remember right, it was a modern update of 'Volpone', so it only makes sense that it would be. Well, enjoy!

Notes on the compilation:

#10: Sorry about the poor sound quality on this track. If anybody has a better version, please let me know. Thanks!

By Request - Theme from 'Kaz' (1978 TV Theme) (Fred Karlin)

'Anonymous' requested the theme from the 1978 TV show, 'Kaz' by Fred Karlin and here it is. At first, I thought I didn't have it, but I eventually found it in my collection. I forget where I got it from, but thanks to the original source wherever and whoever you are! The sound isn't the best, but it's a jazzy theme to the show starring Ron Leibman as a lawyer (who I think played the drums as a hobby which may be the reason why the theme is jazzy).

It's amazing how some shows from the 1970's are burned into my memory. I remember seeing shows like 'On The Rocks', 'The Hot L Baltimore', 'A Year At The Top', or 'All's Fair', for instance, and then decades later, you run across some information about them and realize a show had only been on for one season or in some cases only four episodes! 'Kaz' was a show like that. I think I watched it because I liked Ron Leibman in other things. I remember seeing these shows as clearly as I remember seeing 'Happy Days' or 'Charlie's Angels', but it's funny to realize how obscure some of these shows are! They don't seem obscure in your own mind. Memory is a curious thing all right.

Well, enjoy 58 seconds of Fred Karlin goodness!

By Request - King Kong Lives (1986 Soundtrack) (John Scott)

Another great friend to this blog,'Isbum', left a wish list under the Orphaned Film Songs post and asked for this great score. I was thinking of posting this before and now it gives me a great excuse to. This is one of my favorite John Scott scores and it includes bonus tracks from 'Greystoke', 'Shoot To Kill', 'Phantom of the Sun', & 'The Final Countdown'. This is a score with another classic theme that will stay with you.

This movie is also my favorite Linda Hamilton-acting-with-a-giant-hulking-behemoth movie. No, wait, that's Terminator. Okay, it's my second favorite Linda Hamilton-acting-with-a-giant-hulking-behemoth movie. Wait, I forgot about Terminator 2. Okay, make that third favorite. Enjoy!

Son Of The Pink Panther (1993 Soundtrack) (Henry Mancini)

Posting the 'Inspector Clouseau' soundtrack made me think of posting this as well. It's not Henry Mancini at his best (and though it kills me to say it, there was a certain point in his career after which most of his scores are not what you would call his best), but I thought I'd post it for people who want to complete their Mancini Panther scores, but never wanted to buy this one. If you did intend to purchase it, please do (but feel free to download it anyway until you do buy it). That concludes the advertisement for a CD which may or may not still be in print. Enjoy!

A Few Things I Wanted To Mention

Just found out Telstar Ted at L.S. Bumblebee just ended his blog a while ago and was sad to hear it. He was one of the few bloggers who actually came back after ending his blog the first time, so I always had an enormous amount of respect for that. My hat's off to him and I hope he enjoys his non-blogging time. Stop by and say hi if you're around, Ted!

And did I miss it? I turned around and Audio History seems to be gone too. (Another link I forgot to put up). Hope nothing's wrong.

Also, it occurred to me that I should've mentioned this before, but if you were wondering why there seems to be a delay in posting or responding to comments or why I talk about being behind in my blog-surfing or downloading, there's a good reason for it. I don't have an online connection at home. I have to use other computers to do surfing, E-Mail, downloading, and blogging.

It didn't seem to be much of a problem, but it is the reason why it's harder to coordinate surfing with my collection for instance. Not as easy to find out what's available or what I should post on the blog, for instance. It's also why, if I get artwork off the web, it's sometimes (maybe most times) not in the file. I'm trying to do it more often, but I basically have to download it, take it back, put it in the zipped folder, then bring it back, so most of the times I forget to do it. And it's also why the zipped files are read-only. Can't seem to change the file properties on these other computers. Probably need admin privileges to do it.

Anything I upload or download, I have to burn onto CD-RW's and transfer back and forth. It can take a while and it's also one of the reasons my download queue tends to be pretty big. I'm not able to download files from blogs as quickly as I'd like to, so there tends to be a time lag. It's also why it's a bit harder to leave comments on other people's blogs. I only have a limited amount of time on whatever computer I'm using. That wasn't as much of an issue until I started blogging. Now a lot of my online time is associated with the blog, blog maintenance, and catching up with other blogs.

But I'm definitely not complaining. It just occurred to me that I should mention it so people understand why they sometimes don't get an immediate response to comments or requests, for instance. It seems fast to me, but I look up and a week has gone by. I usually use library computers (don't tell anybody - they probably frown on this kind of use), so my visits can sometimes be sporadic.

And is it just me, or have a lot of soundtrack blogs sprung up in the last few months? When I started the blog, I don't remember any blogs that specialized solely in soundtracks (or least I didn't know about them), and now there seems to be a new one springing up every day. It's fantastic! It's like Christmas come early. I'm glad they started AFTER I got a premium account.

And it also saves a lot of trouble as far as uploading goes too. There must be at least 10 soundtracks I was thinking of putting up that I notice other blogs have just put up. Now I don't have to bother (though sometimes it's with a touch of regret that I don't get to put up that great music here, but I'm just glad it's available somewhere!).

And speaking of posting stuff, I plan on putting up the requests that people asked for (at least the ones I have), so don't worry if it seems to take a while. I've read all the comments people have left (no matter how old the post is) and I'll be posting a response to all the comments. It sometimes takes a while, but I always respond.

And I notice a bunch of great bloggers and sites have linked to me lately. I haven't gotten the chance to thank them on their blogs, so again until I do, thanks a bunch to Jean's Music Blog, Lellebelle, Psychoplasmica, Scorebaby Annex (that's a real treat), Shoddity, Skunkape's Crap, Snow Day, Soundtrack Lover (I kept thinking I put up your link, but now I finally did!), Mexicovers, Napsmear, Weirdomusic, Senses Working Overtime, The Crime In Your Coffee (another one I keep forgetting to put up), and other nice blogs and forums, including some new ones like Psychotic Leisure Music and Delfinotrack. Those are the more recent ones I can remember (though I've gotten linked by some interesting foreign forums and sites, horror forums, and some things that I'm not sure what they are). Of the older blogs and sites like Lellebelle, Mexicovers, Snow Day, Senses Working Overtime, and Weirdomusic, it's a real treat to be linked by them since I've enjoyed their work for such a long time. No matter how many times it happens, I'm always amazed that people spontaneously link to me.

And if I've forgotten anybody, my apologies. Have I mentioned how much I love other people's blogs?

Tico To Tico 2: Crimetastic (You Don't Have To Visit This Bachelor's Jail Cell)

I never intended to make a Volume 2 since I didn't want to repeat the same thing I did on the first volume, but I was looking over my collection and there were certain tracks I wanted to use and after collecting them together, I thought, 'Hey, maybe I should make THIS volume 2'. And believe it or not, I never intended to make up a crime compilation, but after trying to figure out what to call it, I noticed that a lot of the tracks had crime in common. I could just as easily called it 'Jazztastic' or 'Fill-in-the-blank-tastic' (someday I'm going to have to do a compilation about 'fans').

If I had intended to do a crime compilation, I would've made all the tracks about crime, but that ground has already been pretty well covered by many fine commercial compilations like 'Ultra-Lounge', all the Bond compilations, or 'Crime Jazz' (which I think is still available at Endless Mike or by private compilations and mixes like this excellent one at Licorice Pizza / A Taste of Vinyl (hi Timbo!).

I suppose this is Volume 2 because I made it up in exactly the same way I made up the first one. Usually, I pick a theme first, then compile. With these, I picked the tracks first. And they were both quick & dirty comps. The selection process was very fast, but it was all the tweaking that comes later that took a long time (trimming, tagging, etc.). And just like the first one, I tried to use tracks or artists that weren't used as much in other compilations, but just like the first one, I couldn't help using some familiar or overly-used ones as well. (On the first volume, I still ended up using Esquivel and The Three Suns, for instance, and on this one, I ended up using things like the Theme from S.W.A.T.)

That is one of the problems with trying to do a volume 2. When you avoid the more familiar ones, you start having to use ones that aren't as good or repeating the same albums, so I figured I didn't have a volume 2 in me that would've been as satisfying as the first one. So, technically, this volume 2 is really a completely different compilation, but I enjoy making it part of a series anyway. Volume 3 will probably be called 'Tico To Tico: Raptastic" - my tribute to 50 Cent.

And this volume has more flutes, organs, and rhythm sections than the first one. And when you're talking about flutes, crime, and jazz, it's hard resisting the temptation to put Henry Mancini scores on, but somehow I managed and just put on one from his disco era instead (boy, lucky you!).

Still and all, this is probably more like a conventional compilation than what I usually do, so I'm not sure how well it turned out. I can't be objective about these things. And, of course, the joke here is that 'Tico Tico' really has nothing to do with anything on this comp. But if you noticed carefully, it didn't actually have anything to do with most of the tracks on the first volume either!

Well, enjoy (but I'll leave it up to you to decide how much)!

Boy, The Readers Of This Blog Sure Are Nice!!

This post is dedicated to the kind readers of this blog who have generously uploaded music and made it available for the rest of us to enjoy:

First, here are links to Mickey's home-made easy listening compilations culled from various sources (such as the Ultra-Lounge series) (and if you've been reading the comments sections, you know Mickey is a great friend to this blog and one of my favorite commenters). He mentioned making up these comps once, I asked him about them, and he uploaded them only with the intention of responding to my inquiry, but I decided to put them in this post so you can all enjoy them:

Isbum just made this link available in response to Robotgunfighter's request for the 'After The Fox' soundtrack. The file also includes 'What's New Pussycat?' - both scores by Burt Bacharach.

After The Fox / What's New Pussycat?

And don't forget about Norman Conquest's generous offering of songs from the movie, 'Joe Vs. The Volcano'. You'll find them under the 'Updates' post and the original post for the Georges Delerue score.

Updates - We've Got Updates!

For Anybody Who's Already Downloaded:

Tico To Tico: Ticotastic!:

My copy of the Three Suns album, "Movin' 'n' Groovin'" had a slight skip on the 'Caravan' track; when I made up the compilation, I only noticed it after it was done. I wanted to put the comp up, so I let it slide, but that slight skip always bothered me, so I downloaded Planet Xtabay's copy of the original album so I could replace the track. I've uploaded that track so if you want to, you can just replace Track #18 in the comp. Also, if you want the whole album, please go to the excellent Planet Xtabay and get a copy. I think Rockovergraceland has a copy as well (in fact, I just checked and he does have one here), so see how many different copies of the same album you can get! Make a game of it and keep score. That's what I do for fun. You can never have too much Three Suns!

Joe Vs. The Volcano (Georges Delerue)

"Norman Conquest", a kind reader of this blog (as opposed to somebody else's blog), made a generous offer of the songs from the soundtrack to go with the instrumental score that I put up here. He thought it would make a nice complement to the rest of the soundtrack and I agree! Most of the songs are directly from the soundtrack and include dialogue and sound effects. I got a big kick out of listening to them and hopefully you will too. I put them all in a rar file for your convenience (and mine). Thanks a lot, Norm (and if you like them, thank him too)!

Joe Vs. The Volcano - Soundtrack Songs:

Track List:

02 - Eric Burdon - Sixteen Tons
03 - Ray Charles - Ol' Man River
04 - Unknown Artist - Donde Vive Mi Amor - [On The Street Where You Live]
05 - Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 - Soul Bossa Nova / Mas Que Nada

11 - The Del Vikings - Come Go With Me
12 - Tom Hanks - The Cowboy Song

The Tamarind Seed (1974 Soundtrack) (John Barry)

Here's another nice soundtrack from John Barry. When I posted 'Follow Me' by John Barry, I never realized that it was considered such an obscure album (or film), but this one, I guess, should be a higher-profile movie considering it starred Julie Andrews & Omar Sharif. Still, I haven't seen it around on other blogs, so I thought somebody might enjoy it. It's a nice one. Oh, wait, I said that already. Still, between the first time I said it and the second time I said it, its nice status didn't change much. Well, enjoy it! That's an order!

How can you not like any woman with a pet ocelot? For lovers of crime jazz - a great album. I'm surprised nobody else has posted this already (if they have, sorry if I've ignored it). I almost wasn't going to post it myself. There's a slight weird sound on track #3 and I wasn't going to bother putting it up, but then I thought 99.9% of Honey West was better than none at all! Here's an absolutely fantastic album from Don Swan. Don't take my word for it. Listen to it and decide for yourself (but you'll have to download it first). Beach Blanket Bingo (1965 Soundtrack) (Frankie, Annette, & Les Baxter!)

I wanted to put up one of the Beach Party movies, but I couldn't decide which one. I've always loved the title song, so I ultimately decided on this one. And after that last Les Baxter post, I thought I'd post another. Well, at least the instrumental score is by Les Baxter.

Another funny (at least to me) story though. After I uploaded this one, I was trying to catch up on some blog-surfing and I saw that Check The Cool Wax had already put this up not that long ago. I'd been behind on checking his blog and the last couple of times I had checked it, the archives had disappeared. I thought maybe he had wiped them out for some reason, but shortly after I uploaded this file, I checked again and suddenly all the archives were back and I realized he had already posted some Beach Party soundtracks there!

I was tempted not to post this, but since I already had the links, I went ahead anyway. Just out of curiosity, I did a blog search on 'beach party' afterwards and 'Check The Cool Wax' didn't even come up. Another fine job by Blogger.com. I'm not really complaining, but I've done blog searches on stuff I knew were on THIS blog and they didn't come up, so I have to wonder what search algorithm they use. (And sometimes I've done searches for words I'm staring at on someone's blog and it says it's not there. Okay.)

Well, again, this has nothing to do with Beach Blanket Bingo (it's probably closer to Blog Babble Bingo), but enjoy Frankie and Annette anyway!

P.S. Track #06 has Jackie Ward dubbing for Linda Evans and is backed by Darlene Love and the Blossoms

Track List:

Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) - 01 - Orchestra - Opening Credits
Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) - 02 - Cast - Main Title (Beach Blanket Bingo)
Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) - 03 - Donna Loren - It Only Hurts When I Cry

Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) - 06 - Jackie Ward (dubbing Linda Evans) - New Love

And here's another great soundtrack by the great Les Baxter. What else can I say? I should say something. It's great. Hmmm.....you'll love listening to it. Can't think of anything else.

Oh, yeah. I'm surprised that I haven't seen it posted elsewhere. People love Les Baxter. Maybe they're not crazy about barbarians (or Steve Reeves). Well, in any case, enjoy listening to it! (I'm rooting for Goliath.)

Boeing Boeing (1965 Soundtrack) (Neal Hefti)

Here's another Neal Hefti soundtrack. It's to the Jerry Lewis / Tony Curtis farce that is coincidentally called, 'Boeing Boeing'. I wouldn't say that this is Neal Hefti's best album, but it's not bad. So-so Hefti is still better than a lot of albums I could think of, but I can't help but think that maybe if the movie had been better, he would've been more inspired.

In the past on this blog, I've said things like, 'this may not have been the best movie in the world, but it was still enjoyable', but in this case I would rate it one notch below that. It was watchable, but safe to say, not either of those actors' best work. But it is probably one of the only, if not the only, film in which I can remember Jerry Lewis playing a more mature best friend role. He's played mature roles and played sidekick roles, but never usually together.

Now this has nothing to do with the music, but you're probably used to that by now. Come to think of it, there's another reason why I don't talk a lot about the music on this blog. It's not just because I'm terrible at describing music (which you must know by now), although that's the main reason. But the other reason is because it really doesn't matter what I say. I could say this was the worst album in the history of sound-making and people would still want to download it because it was Neal Hefti. Conversely, I could say that this was my favorite album in my entire collection and if people didn't care about it, they still wouldn't download it. I don't say that with any bitterness, but just as an observation. It's just the nature of the way people decide to download things and the way in which they read blogs.

People tend to skip over things they think they're not interested in and download things more because there's, say, an album cover or some other reason that doesn't have anything to do with the music. It makes perfect sense and is understandable, but it's only a shame that people miss out on things they might like. Case in point: I know people who like film scores would like Bernard Herrmann, but because of the way they read blogs, they overlook good stuff. Same thing goes for 'Flying Themes'.

What does all that have to do with Neal Hefti and the soundtrack to 'Boeing Boeing'? Actually, I think that was the plot of the movie. They were way ahead of their time in 1965 making their movie about blogs and all. No, wait. It has absolutely nothing to do with this score. Enjoy!!

Track List:

Boeing Boeing (1965) (Neal Hefti) - 01 - Main Title (Frenchie's Theme)
Boeing Boeing (1965) (Neal Hefti) - 02 - Vikki

Harlow (1965 Soundtrack) (Neal Hefti)

I mentioned back on the Red Buttons memorial post that I was thinking of putting up 'Harlow' and here it is! It's a great album and based on the downloading of 'Sex and the Single Girl', people seem to like Neal Hefti. I do too (it's amazing how few albums I put up that I hate). Well, if the track titles like, 'Lonely Girl Bossa Waltz' and 'Scrambled Eggs' don't entice you, then download it just for the track, 'Girl Talk'.

I'm pretty sure it was written for the film, but as a kid this tune to me was a standard like 'Music To Watch Girls By' or 'Walk, Don't Run' and I didn't realize it came from a film. And in case you thought I only put up soundtracks to movies that I love, I never really watched this movie even though it played on television all the time. It never seemed all that good, but I may just have been pre-judging it. It starred Carroll Baker (though you may have figured that out from the track title, 'Carroll Baker A Go-Go') in the Jean Harlow biopic. Well, regardless of the film, enjoy this great album!

Track List:

Harlow (1965) (Neal Hefti) - 01 - Lonely Girl - Main Title - [Vocal]
Harlow (1965) (Neal Hefti) - 02 - The Right One

A Man Could Get Killed (1966 Soundtrack) (Bert Kaempfert)

Here's a nice soundtrack by Bert Kaempfert. It's to another one of those movies, like Sex & The Single Girl, My Geisha, or some others I've posted, that I always enjoyed watching, but couldn't objectively say that these were the best movies in the world. It was a comedy starring James Garner, Melina Mercouri, Tony Franciosa, and Sandra Dee.

As far as the music goes, if you know Bert Kaempfert, then you know what to expect. These types of soundtracks are always great. And I should also mention that this is one of those movies that, as far as I know, falls into the category of having music or a theme which is interesting or popular enough that they decide to add lyrics to it later. In this case, Eddie Snyder & Charles Singleton added lyrics and it became the song, 'Strangers in the Night'.

I was always thinking it would be interesting to do a compilation of those songs that started out purely as instrumentals and then had lyrics added later, maybe just from films, and I used to keep a sort of mental list, but it was a long time ago, and I think I've forgotten most of them. The tricky thing is you'd have to do a fair amount of research on them to find out exactly when they added lyrics, but I think the real thing that stopped me from doing it was that I couldn't come up with a full 90-minute tape's worth. I think some others that fall into this category might be songs like, 'At Last', 'More', 'A Time For Us', 'Stella By Starlight', etc., but I couldn't be sure without more research. Well, that doesn't really have anything to do with anything, but this soundtrack just reminded me of it. (Aren't you glad?)

Well, anyway, enjoy hearing 'Strangers in the Night' before it became 'Strangers in the Night'..........

Jesus Christ Superstar (1972 Brasilian Cast)

Here's the 1972 Brasilian cast album of Jesus Christ Superstar. I think I already put one of these tracks on one of the Alternative Stage Music volumes, but I thought people might like to hear the whole thing. I've put the English language titles in brackets.

The musicals and stage-related material I put up doesn't tend to be that popular on the blog, at least as far as I can tell (it's always hard to know for sure since I have no way of tracking the number of Megaupload downloads), but popularity's never really been the watchword for this blog anyway. If popularity was the guiding factor for what to post, the entire blog would probably be blank except for a few pictures of Jacqueline Bisset and Shelley Fabares in a bikini. Come to think of it, that wouldn't be so bad either! Well, in lieu of that, enjoy hearing Pontius Pilate singing in Portuguese.........

The Hot Rock (1972) (Quincy Jones)

I know I've said it many times before, but here's a soundtrack to a favorite movie. It's a jazzy Quincy Jones score and a fun reminder of the film about a robbery gone wrong starring Robert Redford. It may be the kind of score that's more fun if you've seen the movie, but unless I get amnesia in the near future, there's no way I can know for sure. My Geisha (1962 Soundtrack) (Franz Waxman)

Another soundtrack by a composer I love. A great album. Another movie that may not have been the best movie, but still enjoyable. It starred Shirley Maclaine & Yves Montand. She played the wife of a film director, who, to keep an eye on him, pretends to be a geisha.

I might be wrong, but I think at one time this album in good condition was considered to be a collector's item and was fairly expensive. It may still be; I don't know. Either way, that doesn't really have anything to do with the musical quality and you can't go wrong with Franz Waxman. Enjoy!

Track List:

My Geisha (1962) (Franz Waxman) - 01 - Main Title
My Geisha (1962) (Franz Waxman) - 02 - Goodbye, Lover
My Geisha (1962) (Franz Waxman) - 03 - Arrival In Tokyo
My Geisha (1962) (Franz Waxman) - 04 - The Plot
My Geisha (1962) (Franz Waxman) - 05 - The True Geisha
My Geisha (1962) (Franz Waxman) - 06 - Preparations
My Geisha (1962) (Franz Waxman) - 07 - You Are Sympathy
My Geisha (1962) (Franz Waxman) - 08 - The Real Yoko
My Geisha (1962) (Franz Waxman) - 09 - Lucy's Arrival And Finale

Soundtrack Gamut, A-Z

I was looking over part of my collection a little while ago and kept thinking I'd like to make a few bits of music available from certain films or composers, but I didn't have a context in which to do it, so I thought I'd do it this way. These represent soundtracks that, for whatever reason, I'm not very likely to post on the blog, but I thought you'd like some music from them anyway.

This concept is actually a variation on a compilation I made up a long time ago on which I put classic film scores, A-Z (though I had to stretch that concept just a bit when I put something on from 'Xanadu'). That was on a tape, but I've never updated that one digitally. That compilation was a lot of fun to listen to, but of course, when you do something like that alphabetically, you sacrifice some musical flow. This one actually flows better than that old one did, but you get the idea.

You could do dozens of these kind of compilations and I was tempted to call it Volume 1 (like anybody really cares), but unless I dropped certain letters like Q, X, or Z, I wouldn't make it too far past Volumes 2 or 3! So I thought I'd see how this one went first.

You can also think of it as a painless way to take a chance on listening to music from a composer or film that you wouldn't ordinarily take a chance on. Some people may want to get the various Lalo Schifrin or John Barry tracks ('Who's Minding the Mint?' and 'They Might Be Giants' are favorites (music and films) of mine. Others may want music from certain movies like 'Dr. Who & The Daleks', 'Quatermass and the Pit', or 'Jack The Giant Killer'. Still others may want the jazziness of tracks from Alex North or Elmer Bernstein.

Or it might be worth it just to hear the fantastic music from 'The Nutty Professor'. Speaking of which, a funny thing happened between the time I had finished the comp and uploaded it. I noticed that 'Your Pal Doug' had just posted music from Walter Scharf at his site and he included the main title from 'The Nutty Professor' via a contribution from Chris at Ultra Swank.

Doug has also posted another album by Walter Scharf (don't let the topless cover model discourage you), so I suggest you all go over there and download them. If you love Walter Scharf's music like I do, you've got to go over there. I haven't listened to Chris' version of the Main Title yet, but it's undoubtedly better than mine, so make sure you download that one too. If I had seen that before I finished my comp, I would've taken it off, but it was too late, so there you are! Well, in any case, enjoy!!

Total Time: 1:03:35 (shorter than the usual comps)

Notes on the compilation:

#01: also known as 'The Concorde: Airport '79'

#05: This is music from one of those Sylvester Stallone 'soccer-as-a-diversion-for-a-prison-escape' movies. Boy, if I had a nickel for every one of those I've seen! The movie was also known as just, 'Victory'. It has a fantastic march that you would expect from a World War II movie and from Bill Conti.

#07: This also had the alternate title of 'The Ultimate Solution of Grace Quigley'. It's from that 'Katharine Hepburn-has-wacky-adventures-with-hitman-Nick-Nolte' movie. If I just had another nickel for every one of those..... If you liked the music from Sleuth or John Addison in general, you'll like this fun track.

#08 & #16: I tried to stay away from more familiar themes like 'How To Steal a Million' or 'The Prize', but I love those themes (and the movies as well), so I couldn't help but sneaking them on.

#14: This main title is basically Walter Scharf adapting the music of Victor Young from the film, 'The Uninvited' which in this context is specifically the song, 'Stella By Starlight' (which should be because of the presence of Stella Stevens in the movie (and as a result, the character's name) unless it's just an incredible coincidence that that's the theme they chose to use). Try saying that sentence 5 times fast!

#26: And this is basically Ian Fraser adapting the music of Max Steiner.

Don Ralke - Bongo Madness (1957)

Here's a nice album from Don Ralke (I try not to put up really terrible albums, if I can help it - though that may change at any minute!). Looking at the cover and the track list, you can probably tell what to expect. Just a thought; do you think the woman on the cover is sneaking up on him so she can steal his bongo drum? Maybe that's why he's crouching and looking to his side.

The cover looks familiar like I've seen it on somebody else's blog, but I did a blog search and it didn't come up. But if somebody else has put it up, my apologies. In any case, enjoy, but try not to go too bongo mad!

Track List:

Don Ralke - Bongo Madness (1957) - 01 - Bembe Negro

Update: 'Blog-A-Roonie' & 'Penthouse Safari' have pointed out that this album has bad sound as if it has been noise-reduced to the point of being unlistenable. Unfortunately, this is the only copy I have. I should've pointed out before that this isn't my rip, so there's not much I can do about the sound.

If I remember right, I got it off a site that's been gone for 2 or 3 years now, so that's why I didn't bother to credit it. I guess that was back in the good old days when people were glad to rip anything from vinyl and weren't as concerned with sound quality. I listened to it briefly before I posted it and didn't notice the less-than-stellar sound, but I think it's just that my expectations are low. If you're expecting CD quality, it does have bad sound. If you're not paying much attention like I was, you might think it's okay. I like good sound quality, but I listen to everything from old cassettes to 78's (not mine, but other people's), so less-than-perfect sound doesn't tend to bother me.

I'm debating whether to take the post down. Anybody else think it's bad enough to remove? Or should I leave it up in case anybody wants it regardless of the sound? Let me know. Thanks!

Force 10 From Navarone (1978 Soundtrack) (Ron Goodwin)

Here's a nice Ron Goodwin soundtrack. The film is the nominal follow-up to the film, 'The Guns of Navarone'.

I've always loved the march from this movie and now you can love it too. Enjoy!

Sorry, no track list for this one, but it has 12 tracks and the total time for the score is 27:31 min.
