Is Anyone Having A Problem With The Files?

'Anonymous' said that he was having trouble using Unstuffit to open up the 'TV Favorites Sing Just For You' zip file. He said he tried that program and others and none of them paused for the password. Has anyone had any problems with any of the files? - passwords, unzipping, dead links, etc. I use WinRAR and have never had any problems, but if you've experienced any problems using other software or any problems in general, please let me know one way or the other. I'd appreciate it!

Tico To Tico: Ticotastic! (You Don't Have To Visit This Bachelor's Pad)

All the compilations I've put on the blog so far have been either ones I made up a long time ago or ones I started but didn't finalize until recently. They've all been for my own personal pleasure (and the odd friend who got foisted with a copy), but this is the first compilation I've ever made specifically with the blog in mind. I made it up in a slightly different way than I usually do (I'll spare you the details). I felt bad that I wasn't offering a lot that people who were being referred from great lounge (& more) sites like Planet Xtabay, Sounds of Champaign, and Licorice Pizza who had linked to me would be interested in, so here is a meager offering.

I'm terrible at categorizing and describing music (as you may have noticed); unless it's a very obvious category like country or classical for instance, I tend to think of music in two basic categories: music I like and music I'm less interested in. I just know what I like, but I'm terrible at figuring out what type of music it is. So when it came time to name this compilation, I realized I had no clue as to what to call it. I included tracks with a certain sound or rhythm and ones that I liked that flowed well together, but I still had no idea what to name it.

So I asked for your suggestions on what to name it and you really came through. Thanks!!

This was a pretty quick and dirty compilation and I didn't really put a lot of thought into it, but I still think it turned out nicely (though lovers of lounge and spage age pop will notice a lot of the usual suspects here as far as albums go). So enjoy!

Update: My copy of the Three Suns album, "Movin' 'n' Groovin'" had a slight skip on the 'Caravan' track; when I made up the compilation, I only noticed it after it was done. I wanted to put the comp up, so I let it slide, but that slight skip always bothered me, so I downloaded Planet Xtabay's copy of the original album so I could replace the track. I've uploaded that track so if you want to, you can just replace Track #18 in the comp. Also, if you want the whole album, please go to the excellent Planet Xtabay and get a copy. I think Rockovergraceland has a copy as well (in fact, I just checked and he does have one here), so see how many different copies of the same album you can get! Make a game of it and keep score. That's what I do for fun. You can never have too much Three Suns!

Yet another update: Thank you so much for the help on the name! I liked all your suggestions (I didn't think I'd like ALL of them, but I actually did!). I loved 'Tico To Tico' by Loungetracks (I didn't even know he was stopping by!....another blog that I'm a big fan of, so I got a kick out of seeing your name up there!).

I also loved 'Ticotastic!' by Rangeraver (thanks so much for the kind words.....I don't know if I have a volume 2 in me, but I really appreciated hearing your kind feedback!!....you were in that batch of links I was going to put on my list next and before I could, you left that great comment, so thanks so much and thanks for your linking to me!). Anybody else reading this should go over to his blog for so much great material.

I love the hot-cold sound of the name, 'Pacemaker Blues' by Gonzalez On Speed. It has this wonderful abstractness to it. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether it means you need a pacemaker after you've listened to the compilation or whether you have to be old enough to need a pacemaker in order to listen to it, but I still love the sound of it.

And I love the straightforwardness of 'The Easy Lounge' by Mickey and 'The Un-Commercial Compilation' by anonymous. It reminds me of a time, way back in high school, when I turned in an essay titled, 'Untitled Essay' to my English teacher. He wasn't too amused, but I thought it was a great title!

And Mickey came up with so many other great suggestions. I especially liked 'You Don't Have To Visit This Bachelor's Pad'.

Okay, call me a wuss, but I liked three of them so much, that I've decided to call the compilation, 'Tico To Tico: Ticotastic! (You Don't Have To Visit This Bachelor's Pad)'. If that's too long for you, you can just call it, 'TTT: T! (YDHTVTBP)' (which also doubles as an eye chart at your next optometrist exam). I was originally going to call it 'Tico To Tico: Ticotastic!', but Mickey came up with that great title as I was deciding and I just had to call it that!!

Theatre of Blood (1973 Film) Soundtrack

Update: Another one I thought I'd repost in honor of All Saints Day Eve. If you'd like to complete your pseudo-trilogy with some Phibes soundtracks (assuming you haven't done it already), go here to the excellent The Manchester Morgue to get The Abominable Dr. Phibes, and to get Dr. Phibes Rises Again go here to the excellent (but slightly dormant) Phlegm Noir.

Another soundtrack from a movie I love. If you like Shakespeare and you like movies about serial killers, then this might be the score for you. It stars Vincent Price and Diana Rigg; Price is a Shakespearean actor whose bad reviews from a variety of theater (or in this case, theatre) critics drives him over the edge and he starts taking his revenge using methods from Shakespearean plays.

If I had to guess, I'd say the way he takes care of Robert Morley is perhaps the most disturbing to me. Though the plan he had for his real-life wife, Coral Browne, was also pretty disturbing for some reason (though I'm not sure if they were married yet at the time they made the movie). If you've seen the movie, then you know what I'm talking about, and if you haven't I hope that piques your interest. For some reason, I think of this movie as being part of a pseudo-trilogy with The Abominable Dr. Phibes and Dr. Phibes Rises Again.

Michael J. Lewis is another one of my favorite composers; he's composed the music for films like 'The Madwoman of Chaillot', 'The Medusa Touch', 'Ffolkes', 'Sphinx', and many others. This is a composer promo of the score and if you get the opportunity to buy any of his CD's (promos or otherwise), please do because they're great and you'll be very happy with them, I'm sure.

The main theme always sounds vaguely Italian to me for some reason and I love it. Listen to it and see what you think. Enjoy!

John Barry - Follow Me (1972 (or 1971) Film) Soundtrack

I love this soundtrack. The main title has a haunting melody. When I used to watch this movie (in America it was known as 'The Public Eye'), I always loved the music, but this was long before I ever bought soundtracks, so I never imagined getting the music to the film. It was a real treat when I eventually got it. If you've ever seen the picture, the melody stays with you (as I suppose a lot of John Barry themes do). It may not have been the best movie in the world, but it had its own quirky charm.

The comedy starred Topol as a private detective hired by Michael Jayston. Jayston's character suspects that his wife, played by Mia Farrow, is cheating on him, and as Topol follows her around the city, they develop an odd sort of relationship. The theme is bittersweet and it perfectly captures the poignancy of the characters.

Hearing this score also reminds me of a time when you could watch these movies on TV (or in revival theaters). I don't think I've seen this movie in 20 years. Has anybody out there seen this movie on their local TV station (or even cable) lately? Let me know because I'd be curious to know if they're showing it anywhere. Maybe it's just here that they only show movies made in the last 5 years or so. Oh, well.

I got this a long time ago through p2p and it came with cover scans that don't match the track listing, but I've included them anyway. The actual track listing matches both the LP and bootleg CD versions, but I don't know which this is. All the music appears to be the same, but the scanned covers have a different track order. Here are those covers:

Track List:

Follow Me (1972) (John Barry) - 01 - Main Title (Main Title Theme - Vocal)
Follow Me (1972) (John Barry) - 02 - The Meeting
Follow Me (1972) (John Barry) - 03 - The Man on a Scooter
Follow Me (1972) (John Barry) - 04 - Another Chance
Follow Me (1972) (John Barry) - 05 - This is How You Dance
Follow Me (1972) (John Barry) - 06 - Off Again
Follow Me (1972) (John Barry) - 07 - Follow Me
Follow Me (1972) (John Barry) - 08 - Streets and Parks Lanes
Follow Me (1972) (John Barry) - 09 - Some Party
Follow Me (1972) (John Barry) - 10 - Closer and Closer

TV Favorites Sing Just For You, Vol. 1

Another compilation I made up. In some of these cases, the term 'favorites' is used loosely. Originally, I was going to call it TV Actors Sing Just For You, but some of them were hosts or performers rather than actors. And despite what you might think, there are actually some nice performances on here (mixed with some embarassing ones). Consider yourself lucky; Anson Williams used to be on this volume until he got bumped off in favor of something better. I enjoy listening to this comp (especially once Anson was gone) and here's hoping you do too!

Track List:

01 - Carol Burnett - Blow Gabriel Blow (1961)

Notes on the compilation:

#07-#10: British actors. For those who've forgotten or are unfamiliar with them, Linda Thorson & Honor Blackman were on The Avengers (at different times, of course), Peter Wyngarde played the character of Jason King (in at least 2 different TV series, I think) [and then went on to a George Michael sort of event which sidetracked his career, though some kind Brit can correct me if I'm wrong], and Tracey Ullman gave birth to The Simpsons. I wanted to pick a less familiar song of hers actually, but every time I kept coming back to her big hit because I liked it the best.
#12-#13: If you're wondering why I followed Barbara Eden with Liberace, just listening to her song, I couldn't help but put him after her. And if you're wondering what Liberace's doing on a list like this in the first place, he did have his own TV show in the 1950's (ladies loved him with his tux & candelabra.....if only they knew).
#15: Love the surf guitar on this track! Sorry for the poor sound quality.
#21-#23: Three spoken word pieces with musical backgrounds. What's that you say? 'That's me trying......well, try a little tenderness......how insensitive!'

Thanks to Dartman's blog, I was able to replace track #2 with a better sounding copy and I ended up replacing track #18 with a better song from her album. And thanks to Endless Mike's blog, I replaced track #10 with a slightly longer version than the one that I had.

No, it's not Eisenhower, it's Ike & Tina Turner. The CD, 'Bold Soul Sister' has 16 great tracks from 1969. These are tracks from their albums, 'Outta Season' & 'The Hunter'. You can't really go wrong with any of their albums, as far as I'm concerned.

Girls! Girls! Girls! - Australian Female Performers of the 60's, Vol. 1

It seems that every pop compilation has been shared somewhere, so I'm going half way around the world to come up with something I haven't seen elsewhere. This post is dedicated to X Offender (Les) who was one of the first people to leave a comment here. He mentioned that he likes "girl sounds from the 60's, UK or US", so of course, I put up something from Australia! This might not be quite what he had in mind, but it's dedicated to him anyway. Enjoy!

Big Joe, Little Richard, & Medium-Sized Harold

I love Big Joe Turner (in a totally heterosexual way, of course), so a Greatest Hits CD from 1989 is a great thing to have. You can hear his version of 'Shake, Rattle And Roll' from 1954 and 'Flip Flop And Fly' from 1955. Enjoy!

Little Richard is also a favorite, so enjoy another Greatest Hits CD!

Karl Zéro - If You Love Lounge or Latin Dance Music, You'll Love This

I knew nothing about Karl Zéro before I heard his music in an episode of the X-Files. I loved the music, but I didn't think about it until some time later when I was looking around for music and realized I could look for his music. So I eventually cobbled together tracks from different sources (with different bitrates) and ended up reproducing his album which I offer here. That was a long time ago, but it occured to me that somebody else might enjoy it. It is one of the best modern albums of this type that I've ever heard and I always love listening to it. It will make you smile (or dance, I'm not sure which).

At the time, I don't remember discovering too much background information about Karl Zéro (since it was mostly in French and other languages). If I remember right, I think he was a TV personality who did this slightly tongue-in-cheek lounge album (which in many cases seems to reproduce classic orchestrations, such as the one for 'Perfidia').

I'm sure everybody else knows about him but me (that's usually the case), but I don't remember seeing this album on any other blogs which is really surprising (if someone has, my apologies). Hopefully, someone will put up the actual album somewhere, but until then enjoy these tracks! And if you can find the CD (although it would probably be an expensive import), run out and buy it; you won't be sorry! (in fact, now that I think about it, I should do it when I get the chance!!)

Note: a few of the tracks aren't entirely family friendly with the occasional curse word thrown in, but if you're reading this, you're probably adult enough to handle it!

Bob Thompson - Just For Kicks

I felt a little bad that I'm being linked by Timbo's great sites, A Taste of Vinyl & Licorice Pizza, and now, the inimitable Planet Xtabay and I haven't put up many albums that people migrating from those sites might be interested in, so I thought I'd put up some in the next few posts.

Somebody at Lazar's Corner of Lounge Music mentioned Bob Thompson, so it made me want to listen to him again. I seem to remember reading at allmusic (at least I think it was there) a reference the reviewer made to Bob Thompson as being the poor man's Esquivel, but I think that's a little unfair. He's great all on his own.......decide for yourself:

Track List:

Syd Barrett - R.I.P. - I Almost Forgot

After I added that last post, I forgot about the passing of Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd. I don't really have anything to add that better blogs haven't already said, but I didn't want to leave him out of the memorials. He will be missed.

If you want to hear a German cover version of 'Another Brick In The Wall' done by Vierzehn, see the Foreign Language Fun post under Volume 2.

Mickey Spillane - R.I.P. - Stan Purdy - Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer

This last (hopefully, unless there's been some bad news I haven't heard about) memorial post is dedicated to writer, Mickey Spillane. I'm sure other blogs will do a much better job eulogizing his career than I would, so I'll just present this album in which Mickey performs with Betty Ackerman. The first track is the hard-boiled Mike Hammer story with great accompaniment by Stan Purdy's music and the last four tracks are great jazzy instrumentals.

Track List:

01 - Tonight, My Love
02 - Velda
03 - Oh, Mike!
04 - The Woman
05 - The Mike Hammer Theme

Red Buttons - R.I.P. - The Poseidon Adventure / Stagecoach / The Trouble With Angels soundtracks

This second memorial post is dedicated to comedian and actor, Red Buttons. He gave strong supporting performances in such films as 'Hatari', 'Five Weeks in a Balloon', 'The Longest Day', 'They Shoot Horses Don't They', and 'The Poseidon Adventure'. He starred in the spy spoof series, 'The Double Life of Henry Phyfe' in 1966 and the variety/comedy series, 'The Red Buttons Show' from 1952-1955, in which he started a national craze with 'The Ho Ho Song'. Here's side B of the 1953 novelty 45 RPM of that song and I've also included the theme from 'The Double Life of Henry Phyfe' by Vic Mizzy:

He won a Best Supporting Oscar for his second film, 'Sayonara' in which he played a Romeo-like figure opposite Miyoshi Umeki (who also won an Oscar). And if I ever finish it, he makes an appearance on 'Oscar Winners Sing Just For You, Volume 2'. Doesn't quite measure up to the honor of winning an Oscar, but what can I say?

Here is the score to The Poseidon Adventure by John Williams. If you squint, you can see Red on the front cover on the far left, right above Ernest Borgnine.

Track List:

The Poseidon Adventure - 01 - Main Title
The Poseidon Adventure - 02 - Rogo And Linda

Here are the soundtracks to the films, 'Stagecoach' and 'The Trouble With Angels' both with scores by Jerry Goldsmith. Red was only in 'Stagecoach' (as far as I remember) which was a 1966 remake of the John Wayne movie (which, as almost always seems the case, wasn't as good as the original). 'The Trouble With Angels' starred Rosalind Russell and Hayley Mills in a story about mischievous girls and nuns (well, only the girls were mischievous). Again, not the best movie in the world but still kind of fun.

Track List:

01 - Stagecoach (1966) - Main Title Theme From 'Stagecoach'
02 - Stagecoach (1966) - First Born And Escape Route
03 - Stagecoach (1966) - Aftermath

Normally, I would've put up the score to 'Hatari' by Henry Mancini which I like better than the score to Stagecoach, but Ibiza (and I think others) have already shared this, so I didn't bother. I was also thinking about putting up the soundtrack to 'Harlow', but since that was Neal Hefti, I'm sure somebody else has already put that up somewhere too. I may still put that up someday though. I can't resist listening to the track 'Girl Talk' again!

June Allyson - R.I.P. - Words & Music (1948 Film) Soundtrack

The next three posts are dedicated to some favorites who passed away recently.

The first post is for a favorite actress, June Allyson, who usually played the girl next door (although if you want to see a slightly different performance, see her in 'They Only Kill Their Masters'). Cheerful, spunky, desperate, or afraid - she played all those characters effectively. She was a welcome presence in any movie. She did mostly musicals and comedies in the 1940's, did a few more dramatic roles in the 1950's (as well as more comedies), and hosted the TV show, The Dupont Show with June Allyson from 1959-1961. Here's the great theme from that show:

She had memorable performances in such films as, 'Two Girls and a Sailor', 'Good News', 'The Three Musketeers', 'Little Women', 'The Glenn Miller Story', and 'The Shrike', to name just a few. For a while she seemed married to Jimmy Stewart on-screen, but in real life was married to actor Dick Powell.

Here's the 1948 film soundtrack to the musical biopic of Rodgers & Hart, 'Words and Music'. She gave another memorable performance in the comedic number, 'Thou Swell', originally from the stage show, 'A Connecticut Yankee'.

Track List:

01 - Mickey Rooney & Chorus - Manhattan
02 - Judy Garland - Johnny One Note
03 - Betty Garrett - There's A Small Hotel
04 - Lena Horne - The Lady Is A Tramp
05 - Ann Sothern & Chorus - Where's That Rainbow?

Originally, I was thinking about putting up the soundtrack to 'Good News', in which she had a much bigger part, or even possibly, 'The Glenn Miller Story', but those, like so many others, are unfortunately in storage :(( But even though she only had the one or two scenes in 'Words in Music' (at least that I remember), considering the cast and the composers, this ain't exactly chopped liver. In any case, enjoy!

Leroy Anderson Collection

Leroy Anderson is probably familiar to anyone who likes easy listening or light classical music. Or they're probably familiar with his big pop hits or familiar tunes like, 'The Syncopated Clock', 'The Typewriter', 'Blue Tango', or possibly his biggest hit, the Christmas perennial, 'Sleigh Ride'. I defy you not to think of fifties television when you hear 'The Syncopated Clock' or pull a Jerry Lewis routine and start typing when you hear 'The Typewriter'.

Also, for fans of musicals, you get the rare treat of hearing instrumental versions of the music he composed for the stage musical, 'Goldilocks'.

The collection winds down with some familiar Irish (or possibly just Irish-American) folk tunes.

It's some of the happiest, spriteliest, most melodic, and rousing music I've ever heard.

I love this (1988 2-CD) collection and here's hoping you do too!

I'M AN IDIOT

If you didn't already suspect it, you should probably be aware that I'm an idiot. If you were wondering why your comments haven't been showing up on the blog, it's because I forgot that I set it for comment moderation and never bothered to check the comments (actually, I had no clue as to how the whole thing worked). I just thought nobody was commenting. So, you can understand why I'm an idiot. (.........now, if only I could understand why I was an idiot.) My sincerest apologies for not responding any sooner than this!

Well, I've put all the old comments through (some of which are over a month old), and now feel free to call me an idiot too!

.................okay, I just turned off the comment moderation, so there won't be any time lag when you put up comments.

They Came To Rob Las Vegas Soundtrack

A fantastic jazzy score by Georges Garvarentz to the 1969 heist film, 'They Came To Rob Las Vegas', starring Jack Palance, Lee J. Cobb, & Elke Sommer. I love this score and if you love crime jazz like I do, you should love this one as well.

It's hard to come up with music that somebody hasn't already put up somewhere else (and as far as I know, somebody may have already put this up somewhere). Every time I think about posting some great album in this genre, somebody has already posted it, so you start to run out of ideas. But I'm definitely not complaining; I'm glad people are making this great music available. If you want more of this type of music, be sure to head on over to great blogs like LoungeTracks, Lazar's Corner of Lounge Music, ScoreBaby Annex, or Dust to Dust to find all kinds of wonderful material.

You're On Dangerous Ground if you have an Obsession with Sam Butera

I uploaded these with Lazar at Lazar's Corner of Lounge Music in mind since he had posted some Bernard Herrmann at his blog and thought he might enjoy these as well if he didn't already have them. Also, I noticed that he didn't have this other entry listed in his U-Lounge series list, so I thought he and others might also enjoy this addition. This post is also dedicated to other great bloggers & blogs like Timbo at A Taste of Vinyl, LoungeTracks (gone for now), ScoreBaby Annex, and all the other great lounge/soundtrack sites. - [Remember this was a long time ago before all the new ones came along!]

'On Dangerous Ground' was a 1952 (or 1951 depending on which source you consult) film starring Robert Ryan & Ida Lupino with a score by Bernard Herrmann. It's about an urban police detective who's become a little world-weary and violent (in fact, he beats a man until he ruptures the man's bladder) so he's sent out of town by his superior to investigate a murder in the country. There he meets a blind woman played by Ida Lupino and learns some lessons about himself. I fell in love with the track, 'The Death Hunt' (I think it was the Charles Gerhardt version) long before I ever heard the full score, and so it always made me want to hear the rest of it.

My shorthand way of thinking of this film is that it's Brian De Palma's homage/ripoff of 'Vertigo' (just like I think of his 'Dressed to Kill' or 'Sisters' as his version of 'Psycho' or his 'Body Double' or 'Blow-Out' as his version of 'Rear Window'....and the list goes on).

And I mainly think of Sam Butera as the leader of the back-up band for Louis Prima, but he had a career all his own, so it's nice to hear this one. Some great cuts on this one.

See the comments for the info. (These rapidshare links may be a bit tricky to use because of the way the comment section cuts them off, but you can see the full links by using the 'Links To This Post' option right next to the comments link below (or you can even cut & paste the different parts of the link line in your browser on the links that spread out over more than one line - otherwise you get a 'File Not Found' message because the link line is incomplete). And, of course, you can always use the megaupload option too!) - Update: Well, for all of them except Sam Butera, that is.

Covers, Etc. - Tennis Music

In honor of Wimbledon, I thought I'd put up some music that reminds me of tennis.

01) Andy Griffith - The Whistling Ping Pong Game

02) Bernie Green - Futura (1961) - 03 - Ping Pong

03) Players (1979) (Jerry Goldsmith) - 01 - Track 01

04) The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975) (Jerry Goldsmith) - 32 - Tennis with Ann / Meeting Mrs. Curtis

'Players' is the 1979 film with Dean-Paul Martin (Dean's son) as a tennis player & Ali MacGraw. 'The Reincarnation of Peter Proud' starred Michael Sarrazin, Jennifer O'Neill, & Margot Kidder in the paranormal drama. Andy Griffith was on various TV series including 'The Andy Griffith Show', 'The Headmaster', 'Salvage' (I wish that one had stayed on longer), & 'Matlock', he appeared in various films like 'A Face in the Crowd', 'No Time For Sergeants', & 'Rustler's Rhapsody' as well as countless TV movies, he had a successful comedy career as Deacon Andy, and as far as I know, hasn't been publicly associated with Ping Pong. (.........although he has been associated with whistling.)

Originally, I also wanted to put in some music from the films, 'Mr. Hulot's Holiday' & 'Strangers on a Train' which had memorable tennis scenes with Jacques Tati and Farley Granger, respectively. But unfortunately when I went to look for them, I realized they were in that frustrating group of CD's that were in storage, so I had to replace them with some Ping Pong music (......well, it's a kind of tennis). (I know, I know, you don't care.)

Also, I would've liked to put in some music from the films, 'Annie Hall' (with Woody Allen playing tennis) & the more recent 'Wimbledon', but I don't have any music from those films (as far as I know). Also, there's another famous scene in the film, 'Blow-Up', but I don't think I have that soundtrack either (although I think another blog somewhere has shared it, but I can't remember where off-hand).

To be honest, I only thought of putting this up yesterday, so it didn't give me a lot of time to look for other music, but I hope you'll enjoy them anyway.

If you like the Bernie Green cut, I think PixelMutt is still sharing this album at http://pixelmutt.blogspot.com/2006/04/stereo-action-series-bernie-greens_28.html

My track isn't from his copy of the album, so I don't know if there is any difference in sound quality, but I'm guessing the sound quality is probably similar.

Well, good luck to all the players this weekend and to everybody else, enjoy!
