By Request (Sort Of) - The Fall Of The Roman Empire (1964) (Dimitri Tiomkin)

Here's another one where the request was made elsewhere (in a forum) and so it's a 'sort of' request. SteMc of Scores of Scores (go there and get great stuff!) wanted some Dimitri Tiomkin, so I uploaded this, but before I could post it, somebody else fulfilled the request (with an expanded version), but I thought I'd put this up anyway. That's why I more or less stop trying to fulfill those kind of requests unless someone makes them here. Even here, other people are more likely to fulfill it faster than I can, but what can you do? Oh, well.

It's kind of a shame though. I have a lot of stuff that people are looking for, but now I wait to see if nobody else fulfills it before I go through the trouble. I can't tell you how many times that's happened where I've checked on something or uploaded something only to have that effort go to waste. Usually, somebody comes along though, so that's good. Obviously, I don't mind the request being fulfilled from the standpoint of someone getting to hear some great music, but only from the perspective of going to a lot of trouble only to have it become academic (though I'm mostly talking about on other blogs and forums and not here). It makes me feel kind of selfish though. Having stuff and not sharing it. But it's really more about not sharing it at this moment.

And people usually want it faster than I can get it to them anyway, so it ends up better not saying anything ultimately. But you end up feeling bad that you have something they want and aren't giving it to them. Well, take SteMc for instance. He really wanted some Tiomkin and I had a bunch, but I didn't want to upload a lot of it only to find out somebody else posted it before I could put up the links anyway. And I always wanted to post more of it here, but I didn't want to do it all at the same time. So there's the dilemma (my apologies to SteMc). It kills me not to help out a great guy (with a great blog, by the way), so you can't help but feel like a creep when that happens. Then multiply that by 50. It's like that with people requesting, say, Goldsmith in other places. I probably have a lot of the stuff that they want, but if I mention it, but don't post it for a while, do they end up feeling cheated? Or do I make this an all Goldsmith blog, all the time? Hard to know what to do about that. (though it would probably be a better blog if I did!) Well, I have a hard enough time posting, in a timely fashion, the stuff people request here. I'd really love to help them out, but then I run out of time and can't even oblige. Oh, well.

Well, in any case, you can't really go wrong with Tiomkin (though some people might say that he wasn't the most subtle of composers, but I always liked him). I always like the way he hits home with a particular concept or theme and works it throughout the score. Or the way he interpolates folk music into some of his scores. He's the one composer that I can think of, more than any other, who is likely to hit you over the head with a musical theme, but I still enjoy it. Some people describe the music of composers like say, John Williams, as being bombastic, but I don't tend to think of them that way. Now somebody like Tiomkin sometimes did what I think of as one level above bombastic; it's hard to describe. I don't think of it as bombastic, so much as one notch beyond bombastic or around bombastic. That's not an insult, but just an inability to describe it. Well, anyway, enjoy 'The Fall of the Roman Empire' (much more than the Romans did, I'm sure)!
