Soundtrack Gamut, A-Z

I was looking over part of my collection a little while ago and kept thinking I'd like to make a few bits of music available from certain films or composers, but I didn't have a context in which to do it, so I thought I'd do it this way. These represent soundtracks that, for whatever reason, I'm not very likely to post on the blog, but I thought you'd like some music from them anyway.

This concept is actually a variation on a compilation I made up a long time ago on which I put classic film scores, A-Z (though I had to stretch that concept just a bit when I put something on from 'Xanadu'). That was on a tape, but I've never updated that one digitally. That compilation was a lot of fun to listen to, but of course, when you do something like that alphabetically, you sacrifice some musical flow. This one actually flows better than that old one did, but you get the idea.

You could do dozens of these kind of compilations and I was tempted to call it Volume 1 (like anybody really cares), but unless I dropped certain letters like Q, X, or Z, I wouldn't make it too far past Volumes 2 or 3! So I thought I'd see how this one went first.

You can also think of it as a painless way to take a chance on listening to music from a composer or film that you wouldn't ordinarily take a chance on. Some people may want to get the various Lalo Schifrin or John Barry tracks ('Who's Minding the Mint?' and 'They Might Be Giants' are favorites (music and films) of mine. Others may want music from certain movies like 'Dr. Who & The Daleks', 'Quatermass and the Pit', or 'Jack The Giant Killer'. Still others may want the jazziness of tracks from Alex North or Elmer Bernstein.

Or it might be worth it just to hear the fantastic music from 'The Nutty Professor'. Speaking of which, a funny thing happened between the time I had finished the comp and uploaded it. I noticed that 'Your Pal Doug' had just posted music from Walter Scharf at his site and he included the main title from 'The Nutty Professor' via a contribution from Chris at Ultra Swank.

Doug has also posted another album by Walter Scharf (don't let the topless cover model discourage you), so I suggest you all go over there and download them. If you love Walter Scharf's music like I do, you've got to go over there. I haven't listened to Chris' version of the Main Title yet, but it's undoubtedly better than mine, so make sure you download that one too. If I had seen that before I finished my comp, I would've taken it off, but it was too late, so there you are! Well, in any case, enjoy!!

Total Time: 1:03:35 (shorter than the usual comps)

Notes on the compilation:

#01: also known as 'The Concorde: Airport '79'

#05: This is music from one of those Sylvester Stallone 'soccer-as-a-diversion-for-a-prison-escape' movies. Boy, if I had a nickel for every one of those I've seen! The movie was also known as just, 'Victory'. It has a fantastic march that you would expect from a World War II movie and from Bill Conti.

#07: This also had the alternate title of 'The Ultimate Solution of Grace Quigley'. It's from that 'Katharine Hepburn-has-wacky-adventures-with-hitman-Nick-Nolte' movie. If I just had another nickel for every one of those..... If you liked the music from Sleuth or John Addison in general, you'll like this fun track.

#08 & #16: I tried to stay away from more familiar themes like 'How To Steal a Million' or 'The Prize', but I love those themes (and the movies as well), so I couldn't help but sneaking them on.

#14: This main title is basically Walter Scharf adapting the music of Victor Young from the film, 'The Uninvited' which in this context is specifically the song, 'Stella By Starlight' (which should be because of the presence of Stella Stevens in the movie (and as a result, the character's name) unless it's just an incredible coincidence that that's the theme they chose to use). Try saying that sentence 5 times fast!

#26: And this is basically Ian Fraser adapting the music of Max Steiner.

Comments:
Don't you have the complete soundtrack of Bad Day At Black Rock?

I'm looking for this soundtrack for a while without luck.

All the best

Luis

Hi!

The suite from Airport '79 is F----N AWESOME!...

Thanks!!

What a damn shame that the whole score by Schifrin has not been released in any form.

The same thing for Airport 1977 by John Cacavas.

I would like to see Schifrin's Starflight also released.

Thanks once more!!...
