The comedy starred Topol as a private detective hired by Michael Jayston. Jayston's character suspects that his wife, played by Mia Farrow, is cheating on him, and as Topol follows her around the city, they develop an odd sort of relationship. The theme is bittersweet and it perfectly captures the poignancy of the characters.
Hearing this score also reminds me of a time when you could watch these movies on TV (or in revival theaters). I don't think I've seen this movie in 20 years. Has anybody out there seen this movie on their local TV station (or even cable) lately? Let me know because I'd be curious to know if they're showing it anywhere. Maybe it's just here that they only show movies made in the last 5 years or so. Oh, well.
I got this a long time ago through p2p and it came with cover scans that don't match the track listing, but I've included them anyway. The actual track listing matches both the LP and bootleg CD versions, but I don't know which this is. All the music appears to be the same, but the scanned covers have a different track order. In 1976 I first saw the movie and was haunted by the soundtrack. Ever since I desired to watch it again to listen to the soundtrack one more time. In 1986 "The public eye" was announced in a Berlin film theatre called "Movimento", where I went but the film wasn't shown because me and my friend were the only guests. It took at least ten people to start a movie, who didn't show up.
ReplyDeleteWhen computers and surfing came up I was told, that there was an absolutely rare Japanese release on vinyle of the "Follow me" soundtrack, which at that time was impossible for me to obtain (as far as the price was concerned).
Every now and then I tried to bid on the bootlegs that were offered via eBay auctions, but failed.
Tonight I dropped in here accidently and downloaded the score, I can't tell you, how overwhelmingly happy I am right now.
Thank you for soundtrack, love this movie taped it of the T.V.about two years ago. the music is just so haunting and unforgettable thank you again.

ReplyDeleteIt's one of my favorite Barry scores, comparable to his "The Knack" in style, texture and quality. It should also encourage the curious to seek out a copy of the obscure film (aka, The Public Eye), which, while not one of Carol Reed's best, remains a touching, engaging work. It really needs a DVD release.
